What RPM does a 240 turn at 70 mph?

Using 185/75r/14 tires and a stock 4 speed trans in a 81 240d ...

What rpms would the 616 be turning at 70 mph?

just curious...

what rpm is their sweet spot? 63-65?

lets see

my sdl turning 3000 is 73 i think. that is a 288 gear, so in round numbers a 369 gear is about 20% difference so that would be about 3600 rpm for a stock geared 240. i always have limited my 240s to 72 mph on the highway. they seemed pretty happy there.

Some seem happier at 70 than others it has been pointed out from time to time. You know the engine is turning up but depending on condition of a lot of items including the noise abatement blanket under the hood the effect on the driver varies. I know this does not provide a specific answer but have driven different 240s at 70. Some do not feel like the want to be there where others seem to cruise along reasonably well. Again allowing for the fact the engine is turning up pretty good.

The engine speed at 70 mph with 185-75-14's and a 3.69 ratio is 3485 rpm. This would be with manual transmission. The automatic will turn about 200 rpm higher on level ground, and can be 300-400 rpm higher when asking for maximum power.

again in round #s

300d non turbo right? has 346 gears which are about 7% different than the 240 so if running stock tires, 7% off 3600 is about 230 rpm or 3370.

My 82 300D (with 195/70-14) is about 3050 rpm at 70 mph, about 3500 rpm at 80 mph.

My 240 (auto) will do 70 with no problem, but man the noise is just about unbearable. Seems a lot quieter at 65. It is a very spunky 240 though, not doggy like most people here say they are.

My hood insulation is sagging in a few spots, maybe a new one would quiet things a bit?

I have a program in the calculator for it. I just plug in the vehicle speed, axle ratio, and tire diameter and I get the rpm's precisely for a manual transmission vehicle.

Wouldn't the '82 be a turbo vehicle with 3.07 gears??
