Confirm weight a a 300d manual flywheel?

I hope you guys can put up with so many questions

I am making great progress toward my 617 motor to Land Cruiser conversion.

I will be machine and balancing a pre 85' 168 tooth flywheel off a small block chevy. With the 3.58" crank flange bolt pattern I can drill all 12 -10mm flange bolts with plenty of material left to spare. .

My questions stems form the fact a 240d fly wheel is supposedly 7-8 lbs lighter than a 300d manual flywheel.... IS this correct?

The chevy flywheel I have is going to be 37 lbs net. I'd like to be close to the mfg suggested weight. The 240 D flywheel I have is 27.7 lbs.

The mercedes flywheel/clucth etc would have been an easier swap but I felt I needed more rotating mass for the same weight vehicle( benz) i.e. theToyota Land Cruiser..

What I'm using...

617 Turbo diesel..to Chev Flywheel/ chevy clutch with toyota clutch hub/ Lakewood bellhousing mated to Toyota 4 speed trans. btw the input shaft fits thebenz pilot bushing right on... aaahh the metric system!

i am not

expereinced with changing flywheels beyond the parameters of the original contemplated by the factory. i would consider machining it down to 28#. but this is just an opinion not backed by actual experience.

thanks and I appreciate your logic but not sure why you would suggest a 4cly 240 flywheel over the 5cyl 300d FW ?

again I'm not buying a 5 cyl manual flywheel .. just want to compare weights and match as close as possible using teh 14" Chevy ... I'll grind it down to the right weight.

the conversion motor is a 617 from a 300D turbo .. so a 5 cyl( comparable weight) flywheel would probably be the choice for the conversion..

does the 300d manual trans flywheel weigh more than the 27.5 lbs 240 flywheel, if so how much?

You got that basakwards

The info I have (hear say from a reliable source) is that the 300 flywheel is 7# heavier than the 240 one.

Cool project but way outa my realm, I'm lucky to get the tranny back into the car I took it out of

Simple answer to this one........ever try to actualy find a 300D manual flywheel? If you know where there is one call me first then if you find more let the others know...they are rare as hens teeth. The 240D flywheel is easier to find. If they were common the 300D flywheel whould be preffered....just that few people have actually found one..

I do find the remachining of another fly wheel intriging however...

i have a 300

flywheel in my 240/300 conversion. unfortunately i didnt weigh it when it was loose. i seem to remember that it looks a lot like a 240 fw though. seven pounds is a big diff.

The distribution of that weight means more than the total amount of the weight...balance issues you know..

however the Chevy Small bock (except for the 400 or varients using the 400 crank) are internally balanced meaning a zero balanced flywheel. Anything using the 400 crank is externally balanced (meaning flywheel is a factor along with harmonic balancer)
