congrats! good luck with it.

Congrats. I was going to bid on it but I already have a blue one.
We need to figure a way so forum members don't compete over a car.

Looks Good!

After you've had a chance to drive it a while, let us know if it was basically as presented. I'd say that's a decent $1900 car.

Nice buy. I dig the color. I have a sky blue wagon, but I like the dark blue.

That's a good idea, but how. I also thought about offering to check out local cars for bidders who can't make it here before auction end.
I don't know why just now this movie 'There's Something about Mary' is coming to my mind... This damn competition especially between men (over women, and I believe a MB Diesel can easily take a woman's place :D)

Yes, I will give you feedback. I'm going to pick it up on Sat.

I like the color, too, and was also watching that one. It's hard for me to justify spending almost $2,000 on a car that I couldn't see in person, though, have no idea of the character of the seller, and would have to drive 300 or more miles to collect.

I wished that one had been an hour or two away so maybe I could run check it out before bidding.

I hope you did get a good one, and that you keep us posted on how it works out!

burnt

Dang, this is one piece of junk! The problem is, I think it's still too good to be parted out but I will have a couple of days worth of work to bring it on the road (legally and safely):
- 1 fuel line from IP to injector leaking at IP (could this be a reason for some strange vibrations at around 1500 rpm?)
- no air filter and oil dust all over the engine compartment (I have never seen that before, I didn't even know you can run a car without air filter)
- no hood pad
- no spare wheel (well, this is where the VO tank goes anyway...)
- RF brake caliper frozen
- rear muffler broken
- fog lights not connected (wrong type)
- interior lights not working
- power windows not working
and all those little things like hood release latch, door handle, windshieldwasher nozzles, etc. This car looks like it hasn't been serviced in a long, long time!
The body looks pretty good, although there is of course more rust than described (inside doors, underneath rear lights, etc.) It also seems to me like it has been in an accident a while ago. Right front looks like some welding has been done, and the headlight - turn signal assembly doesn't fit exactly (hardly visible).
I guess this is going to be my experimental car for the WVO conversion of my 240D and it is for sure the first AND the last car I bought on ebay!
Oh, I forgot one thing: The AC is working!!!

sucks

"ALL BIDDERS OR POTENTIAL BUYERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS OR BETTER YET COME SEE THE ITEM, BEFORE BIDDING ON IT. ALL ITEMS ARE USED AND A BUYER SHOULD NOT EXPECT A NEW/PERFECT VEHICLE. WE WILL LIST ANY KNOWN PROBLEMS, THAT WE KNOW OF, IN THE ADS AND WE WILL ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS HONESTLY AND AS ACCURATELY AS WE CAN"

A used car salesman selling on Ebay, can it get any worse than that?

I've talked to a lot of people that bought cars/trucks on Ebay, sounds too scary to me.

Good luck,

Hugh

97% positive feedback should tell you something. That would be a great feedback rating if the feedbacks totaled 4 or 5,000 but with only 212 its a bad rating.

Should've asked someone to look at it for you. I'm not terribly far from there and would've checked it out.

I have no problem with buying cars or anything else on Ebay. I just use the feedback rating as a bidding guide along with some common sense. Sure, I've been burned by outright lies but 95% of the time my purchases are exactly as described.

Cheers,

Bill

Dealers and other slime

When I see dealer, I automatically recoil. Especially a used car dealer. I bought mine on eBay too, sight unseen, and even took a train down to Maryland to pick it up, and drove it back. I asked the guy about five times if it had any rust at all, and he said no. He too, like your dealer, was a liar.

But overall, if the collision repair is not too extensive, it looks like you got a good deal. Fix the caliper soon. I had the same thing and actually broke the disc when I had to brake hard. It was a little scary. You can get rebuilt calipers at Autozone for $40 for the non ATE (can't think of the brand) with a lifetime warranty.

Besides, I think if people did not do their own work on these old Mercedes, it would cost like a new one to service. I did my complete brake system - rebuilt calipers front, I rebuilt the rear calipers, new rubber lines, new textar pads, new discs and caliper pins and clips for $520. I have a friend that had the same done on his 300SD by a local garage and spent $1,700.

One thing about fixing the things that are wrong with the car is that once you fix it, you know it is good, and you don't have to deal with it anymore.

Best of luck with your new ride. I may be picking up another 1985 300TD from a friend whose father bought it new, and it has had mostly dealer service it's whole life. That is the kind of car to find. Just dumb luck in my case.

I bought a car for over $2k on eBay Monday, I've got two cashier's checks, one for $500, and one for $500 less than the purchase price. If I think it's misdescribed when I go to pick it up tomorrow, I'll try to negotiate up from a $500 discount, if I think it's misrepresented by more than $500, I'm taking Amtrak home. Some guy listed it to a friend, I talked to the lister by email and the owner by phone, and get a generally good feeling about them. Owner is driving the car 100 miles to meet me, so at least it runs. I'll be taking a compression tester with me. Owner claimed that all cylinders matched within a couple psi, if that checks out, I'll feel better about trusting him.

with all thats rust under the taillights, I'm afraid for you to look behind your rear bumper. Mine was terrible, but nows the time to pull offf the bumper and treat it or patch itbefore you start racking up the miles on it.

PatrickW 10-28-2005 10:00 PM

Couple of "red flags" that I noted:

1) Chrome Fender liners. What's up with those? Quite possibly a teenager was the previous owner...
2) Non-standard headlights. What happened to the original ones? Again, probably the work of a kid.

In any case, good luck. You didn't pay all that much.

Fix it up a little bit and you could double your money reselling it on eBay if you decide not to keep it.

Sorry, dude. :(

At least the problems with mine all are things I could've and should've caught before I committed and I can only blame myself. ... And hopefully will be cleared up without too much added expense (although I swore to myself I wasn't going to buy a project car). ... And there was an air filter, and it passed inspection with ease, and all that.

Sorry. :(
