Best repair manual

Hey, folks,

I was going out today to purchase a repair manual for my newly purchased 1983 300D. (Chilton, Haynes, etc.) Who publishes the best?

Thanks,
Glenn

Mercedes does, and it'll cost you, and if you are really serious about doing your own work you'll spend the money. And this advice comes from one cheap a** yankee.

You're probably right. ... But what does "cost you" equal? :o

Does Bentley make a Mercedes manual... I couldn't find one but they are great manuals for many european cars.

I couldn't find one either, at Bentleypublishers.com. ... No 300D manual for older than 1986.

They can be had through e-bay or other private sellers, sometimes very reasonably. I bought mine new from MB, which cost a good $200 for 3 manuals in 1996. Or, you can access http://mb.braingears.com/, which makes the real manual available. You can print it all out if you have the time and printing resources. If you do, you can put it in a 3 hole binder so it can lay flat.

ARGH! ... Except all the links I click for actual service documents come up with PDFs not found. :(

You can get your own manual downloaded to your PC by using a program like HttTrack to copy a website like http://skinnerbox.steaky.org/Service/W123/Main.html.

It didn't work very well on the braingears website for some reason but works great on Skinnerbox.

I have managed to maintain almost a million miles worth of 123 diesel driving with no manual other than this site and a Haynes manual. My Haynes manual is now about an inch and a half thick including the various information that I have printed from this site and stuck in the book. It also looks like it's been around the world three or four times.

Not all Haynes manuals are relly good, but the one on the 123 diesel is. Regardless of what other manuals you get, the Haynes manual is WELL worth the $20 or less that it costs.

Good luck,

Thanks, Larry. I'll get a Haynes or Chilton's today at AutoZone or wherever in town sells whatever, and then keep my eyes peeled for true-MB shop manuals at a price I can stomach.

The Hayne's manual is good the Chilton is almosty totally worthless. Which is sad because chilton used to be the best by far.

The best thing you can do is go buy yourself a 2 or 3 inch binder and printout every thread here that interests you or contains usefull information.

Inside a thread go up to "THREAD TOOLS" and select show printable version.

You can also subscribe to threads which will be kept handy in your USER CP. You can even be e-mailed when someone adds to a thread. This has proved for me to be very valuable.

I never noticed that. I think I could have saved a small forest by using that feature.
Thanks :sun_smile
