same thing
It really does look like we have the exact same issue. I did some testing as well as you got me trying to trouble shoot this again.
I went 55 or so. Shifted from D into 3, nothing, went down to 2 and car shifted into three, but after a sencond or so went to freewheel mode. So I did the same thing, went 55, but shifted straight to 2 which "forced" the tranny into three and then I shifted back into three and it held the shift. Strange stuff I tell ya.

Just a follow up in case anyone looks this up later. I know Bajaman was having issues too.
I have success! I disconnected the bowden cable completely, and it started working. So although I had it adjusted correctly, I guess my car (or maybe all of them) is finicky. It appears that if the bowden cable is too tight, and even just barely, the transmission will not downshift manually. So if your transmission won't manually down shift, try loosening the bowden cable. Happy to be engine braking again!
