How does VW and MB deal w/ the sulfur?
If high sulfur is the reason most manufacturers can't/won't meet emisions, how does MB and VW do it?

From my understanding (since no one else smarter chimed in =) and IMHO:
short answer - they dont How many threads are there about "no new diesels for sale in Northeast states or california" - b/c emissions are more strict there... In a better answer to your question, I'd say that MB and VW have done the necessary R&D to get diesel emissions good enough to fly in the US- most of it anyway, consequently they are both in bed with Robert Bosch corp. Lots of other companies are also, but unless the corporate board says "sell diesels in the US" the engineering department isnt going to care if its latest compression ignition powerplant is US legal. It's not impossible for another company to get in bed with Bosch, and reap the benfits, its also possible for an american company to buy good diesel motors from a foriegn source that does it well, but if the corporate board of white collar biotches decides not to fund the venture, then...all we get are TDI's and CDI's. I'd not complain if TDI's were cheaper, but I guess its just like the poster- "E320CDI - Justification for Higher Education" -John
