1982 240d engine in any w123 chassis?

I searched the threads and found plenty of 300d engine swaps into 240d bodies-but none for a 240d engine into a 300d or td body. Will this swap work? If the engine will fit, will the manual transmission fit too? If my 240 manual tranny won't work, will the 240 engine mount to an auto trans? Do all w123 chassis' have clutch linkage mounts in place? Would the year of the 300 series car matter? Thanks in advance!

yes yes. you will need to change the pedal cluster. i dont know if all years are exactly the same but largley they are. best bet is to get the same years chassis.

I did one last year. 80 240 engine into 78 300D body. various little things you'll need to bring over, most importantly the driveshaft and trans mount plate.

yes

since you have a manual tranny good to keep it.
also if putting a 240 into a 300 chassis be careful ot note the axle ratio. if a non turbo it will be 346 a turbo will be usually 308 but the 85 is 288. you might get away with the 346 if not in too many hilly standing starts but the others will prob be hard to use with the lower power 240ds.

happy searching

Thanks for the help! Now I know where I stand-I didn't know anything about the hydraulic suspension pump issue. I have a friend from work looking for a w123 chassis car in N.C. as we speak (rust free!) so now we know what to look for. If he does happen to locate a wagon or a turbo car, is there any way around the pump mounting issue?

there were 240tds

made in europe. i have seen maybe two for sale in the us in the last ten years. one wa sin florida john biondac (not sure of spelling). there were also a few 240s made with the hydraulic susp in back that were not wagons. one i heard of in aus. also many in middle east long wheelbase taxis with middle jump seats.

rare as the ivory billed woodpecker here.

Can a hydraulic suspension be converted to a conventional (non-hydraulic) type using a donor car for parts?

yes

anything is possible. but many feel that the wagons suffer from the conversion. they are expensive to maintain if stuff is let go. (PM) but converting will not be easy either.

the leveling suspension gives an incredible ride and excellent handling as well.
