Warning lights, Alternator? 1982 300D

Ok, so I took a 3+ hour drive to day to do work in some coolant flush on my 1982 300D.

I noticed on the way back that the three warning lights on the left of the dash (battery, front brake, parking brake) came on all at the same time (similar to when I turn the key to start the car). They would go off or dim if I accelerated. Conversely, they would light up stronger if I slowed down, or right after the transmission shifted to a higher gear (lower rpm). I also noticed that when they would go off (particularly doing 65 mph or higher) the battery light would be the last to go, and I could make it hover half lit by driving at about 50 mph.

Is my alternator going? Voltage regulator?

Thanks,

Pete.

Very likely that it is one of the alternator components, #1 suspect is the brushes. They are located in the brush/regulator section, which is easily removable from the back of the alternator.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention that although these lights were coming on, I didn't notice the headlights dimming, or anything like that.

Also, what are all the components?

By the brushes, you mean those in the voltage regulator, right? I like the sound of that, cheap and easy. Beyond that, I'm clueless.

Pete.

I've already ordered a new voltage regulator at least as a preventative measure, even if it's not the culprit. Thanks.

However,

I was thinking back....there was one thing I did before all this happened that was out of the ordinary.

Before my road trip to do the coolant flush, I let the car idle for just shy of 3 hours....could this have caused this wierd warning light situation? Also, I cleaned the engine bay with a degreaser and then hosed it off (drying it by running the car). Is it possible that I corroded a connection or something?

Thanks,

Pete.

i think

you are right to pursue the brush/ regulator. i would hazard a guess that 80% of the time that is the problem.
