Thumbs down Mad Max 4?

Unless they built something different for the down under folks - the normal MB 300d engines are not strong enough to sustain a turbo. Yes you can probably retro new intake, exhaust, and a turbo but you will then have to be very careful with any application of turbo boost. Most likely you also shorten engine life.

If you do add the turbo, I would then suggest you start carrying with you a spare wooden (or plastic) basket, so that you can catch any flying pistons/crankshaft parts when your 300D finally sucumbes to the increased internal pressures that that engine was not designed for.

The naturally aspirated OM617 will not tolerate a turbo.
They changed the engine design when adding a turbo.
You can buy a good used engine and have it shipped over; but I fear the freight charge/import tax will be high.

Retro N.A. to Turbo ...Go Boom!

Jetboy,

I hate to tell you, but the guys are 100% correct!

The Factory O.E.M. Turbodiesels have "Nitrided" (a chemical toughening process)
crankshafts AND oil jets spraying cooling oil underneath the pistons into cooling
channels built into the pistons [just for starters]. The extra heat created by
turbocharging (If not corrected for) will "cook off" pistons , rods , Etc.

Inhumane thoughts: After our Fall counter-rotating cyclonic abuse this season
by Mother Nature, there may be available a few W124 T.D.s in the Southeastern
U.S. with significant water damage. But intact and functional engines.

Is there even room beside the steering for a turbo?
