Dieselhead FirstAid: When U have a smashed finger with a Blood Blister under the nail
 

Yesterday, believe it or not I got my finger caught in the dolley wheels of my creeper, where the swivel part meets the frame. I was so Angry at my stupidity that I refused to believe the sudden throbbing twisted nerve endings and blood pooling under my finger nail....but gradually the Throbbing pain took hold,as the blood pooled under the nail and man it Really $^%&( hurt! How can such a small finger cause such volumes of Pain?

When I was in college, I once crushed a toe by dropping a dumbbell on it. A huge blood blister formed under the toe and I was told that it would cause infinite pain unless the pressure was relieved by a Red Hot Scalding Hot Nail or Paper Clip. I got my roommate to do it for me after I had a few b___rs, and it wasnt too much fun & it scared the hell out of me. maybe thats why I didnt join the Navy one month later.

I prepared to do the same Read Hot paperclip trick on my mangled finger yesterday, when my wife's friend, seeing my plight, said, "Wait a minute, theres a much easier way!!" She proceeded to get a 1/16" drill bit and showed me how to gently roll it between my finger tips until it painlessly, and softly, worked a hole through my finger nail. Even a baby wouldnt have flinched! The pain from the finger disappeared instantly.

To those of you who say "What the H___ll does this have to do with Diesels, wait until you smash a finger or toe!!

Been using that sterilized drill bit routine for years. Sure feels good when the blood squirts out and the throbbing stops, huh? By the way the bit doesn't have to be 1/16". The diameter is not that critical. :D

my grandpa did the same thing when he smashed his finger, only he used the drill press ;)

You mean you are supposed to sterilize the drill bit first? Guess I'll give it a shot of carb cleaner next time-that should do it.

Yeah i have heard of that technique for a while now, i a mtoo much of a wuss to use it though if you did make sure i am out cold. I freaking hate needles, ANd i have yet to smash my finger working on my car yet.

I'm going to add a small drill bit to my "on the road/backcounrty" first aid kits while I'm thinking about it...

The little corkscrew on swiss-army knives works okay as well if you don't have a drill bit handy. Or if you just have a nice pointed blade on your pocket knife you can sort of gouge out a hole.

Your fingernail really doesn't have any nerves in it, so if you are careful and don't go too deep into the skin beneath you won't feel a thing.

The key is careful. If you go just a tad to deep its VERY sensitive under there and hurts worse then the smash.

In my line of work , We actually carry a "drill kit" for injured athletes that experience an on field finger or toe injury with resultant bleed under the nail
Comes in its own little carry case complete with varrious drills as well as handle and sterilizing agents

:bulb: Good quality safety glasses are worth all the money in the world.
I had a bolt head break off, fall into the alternator impeller fan and fire into the right lens of my safety glasses, kept those glasses for fifteen years, they bruised my face, the bolt head was embedded in the right lens.

Believe me after about a half hour of throbbing pain, you'll be willing to drill into your finger with a high speed drill motor now that you know the technique.

Reminds me of the dentist who started to give a patient a shot before drilling. The guy in the chair says " no way: I faint at the thought of needles". So the dentist leaves and comes back with nitrous oxide. The patient says " no way: I had a bad trip on that stuff once". The dentist leaves and comes back again with two pills and a glass of water. THe patient asks, "what's that". The doc says, " it's viagra". "That will dull the pain"? "No it won't do anything for the pain, but at least it will give you something to hang onto".
