transmission not shifting to 4rth
1983 300D. I used the search engine and found that the 2 most popular solutions to this problem are:
1. Disconnect the vac. modulator valve on the IP( I even tried disconnected vacuum at the transmission) 2. Disconnect the kick down switch I have done both, and still nothing. The transmission makes nice firm shifts but it takes too long to go into 3rd, and you have to hit about 4700 rpm before it will shift to 4rth. Letting off the accelerator does nothing for the shifting, like it should.

I wouldn't say what you did were "solutions" but tests to determine the problem. Off-hand I'd say "are you sure you aren't starting up in 2nd?" but it sounds like you can get another shift out of it, only way way up in rpm, at speeds exceeding the highway speed limit.
Have you changed the filter and fluid in it? How about Trans-X additive? It smoothed out my old 240D tranny nicely, and I've just put in my new/used 300SD tranmission. Results are still pending. It sounds like you may have some sticky valves in the transmission. If Trans-X doesn't loosen it up, you may be in for a rebuilt valve body, and possibly a rebuild "while you are at it."

I put new fluid and transx and it did nothing. Went in to the shop today for a rebuild.
