Great job! I completely forgot about that aspect of oil reserve predictions. Yes, that is very true. Today, according to the CEO of ExxonMobil, we are drilling 5,000 feet below sea level in the Gulf Coast. That's some pretty complex technology down there. Technological advancements are something to always remember. However though, no matter the technology, some oil wells are dry and can't be tapped for oil again. Or will I be eating up my own words in 20 years time after some technology is developed that can dig even deeper and find oil in what were considered to be "dry wells?" We'll just have to hope to be alive and see!

Old300D,
I sincerely hope that you are not living the false hope that biodiesel can completely supplant fossil fuels. Bio diesel and ethanol are great supplemental fuels, but if you stopped growing food in all the farm land in the US and instead planted only crops to be used for fuel, you could only produce a fraction of the fuel needed to power the countries vehicles. Good luck, |

Biofuels are NOT a replacement for oil. There are too many products that we get from a barrel of oil that biofuels will not give us simply because it is not there to begin with. It is a supplement at best.

I really got a kick out of the part where this college professor proposes planting 150,000 square miles of crop in the desert. It's pretty easy to tell he's a college professor lost in the world of academia. It takes WATER to grow a crop and LOTS OF IT. The guy has been buried in the world of academia so long that he forgot about that I suppose. I hope his theories work out. As with many theories from academia, in practice it's difficult to make them work. I suppose that since there are a few small bio diesel refineries popping up, that this dream could come true and it won't be soon enough for me. I am skeptical, however, of his numbers. All we can do is hope that when this pinhead professor decides to plant his crop, he doesn't plant it in the desert. Thanks for the info. Have a great day, |

diesel fuel
the least the oil companys could do is give us oil burner owners a better quality fuel than what they are dumping on us now. hey, how about raising the cetane so my 1984 runs the way it was designed to do, 50 cetane anyone!

NREL's research focused on the development of algae farms in desert regions, using shallow saltwater pools for growing the algae. Using saltwater eliminates the need for desalination, but could lead to problems as far as salt build-up in bonds. Building the ponds in deserts also leads to problems of high evaporation rates. There are solutions to these problems, but for the purpose of this paper, we will focus instead on the potential such ponds can promise, ignoring for the moment the methods of addressing the solvable challenges remaining when the Aquatic Species Program at NREL ended.
How you going to get that much salt water to that place and what about the rest of the logistics problem like how would you built cities in the desert, etc, etc.
