lets see - getting colder, time to raise the price of heating oil, kerosine and natural gas, and oh yea propane. About the same logic as fuel prices going up around labor day and July 4th
makes no sense

This was from a comment on the Yahoo Finance message board for the US oil company ConocoPhillips.
My quartertly earnings estimate was high by another 10 cents for the following "the company's domestic wholesale and retail prices did not increase as rapidly as gasoline and diesel spot prices" . . . thank you Jim (Mulva), the country is ever grateful for your generosity in not passing through market prices to the customers during the recent hurricane times. This voluntary price freezing was also apparently noted by the media, although rather quietly.

It just dropped $0.35 in one day
TA truck stop, I-94 Mich. exit 167, typically about the lowest price hereabouts: Oct. 27, $3.459. Oct. 28, $3.059. A guy at work said the U.S Senate started hearings on price gouging amd that's why it dropped like a rock.
I don't care right now because I have parked the 240 Wheezle for the winter so I can take the head off (again) and get a valve job done (again). I now have a '92 Geo Metro XFi and expect to get 48+ mpg on RUG. I think my Wheezle problems are due to my not checking valve adjustment maybe 1000 miles after the valve job. Car ran great for about 3000 miles, then began idling rougher than ever and nailing like a m.f. A friend told me that my new valves bedded in and tightened up, resulting in burned valves. I should have thought of this. The indy tech. who did the valve job said to just drive it. Now he has checked compression and told me I am down on #1, #3, and #4, and that it is valves, not rings, and that the valves have tightened up.

Yet another post against the Supply & Demand theory. But of course anything that goes against that theory will have to have unsubstantiated proof. Danny

I had not noticed the prices in a while, but when I glanced up at a diesel fuel sign tonight, I noticed it was $2.94. Its ludicrous.

I wish our company could just break even. If we made 10%, all our customers would cry bloody murder and demand price reductions the next year. And they'd get them too!
When was the last time the oils companies posted a loss? It just seems that they have a captive market. One where you can always sell at a profit and adjust price without fear of loosing business. The recent rise in diesell price certainly wasn't because of low supply and high demand. Was anyone not able to find some to buy. I haven't run across any stations with empty pumps. You raise it because you can and you use any reason to justify it.

The oil companies have never ever posted a loss. Except for maybe that little blip in the '70's.
How could they with all the money the government gives them? Or when their not giving it away all the low interest government loans. Not to mention the billions of dollars in government loss insurance. They don't even pay royalties on the government land that they use. How could anyone claim supply and demand when you can buy fuel at a station for say $3.19 and go across the street and buy the same fuel for $1.89? That's not supply and demand that's Rape and Pillage. The oil companies manipulate the market which is apparent in the high cost of diesel fuel. Manipulation, gouging, and even daresay Fraud. All this is exactly why in our economic market and laws it's illegal to hold a monopoly. It's the same thing with Microsoft. The government lets them do whatever they want. Clearly violating anti-trust laws. It took the Europeans to give them the spanking they deserved. Danny

Makes no sense? Let's analyze what is meant by the phrase "supply and demand," shall we? This means that EITHER a decrease in supply OR an increase in demand will increase the price of a product. Now let's apply that to your scenarios: "getting colder, time to raise the price of heating oil, kerosine and natural gas, and oh yea propane." Yep, that's right because the demand is increasing for these products. That matches the DEMAND portion of the phrase. "About the same logic as fuel prices going up around labor day and July 4th" Yep, again more people drive on labor day and July 4th., so again DEMAND is increasing. So you've now learned how "supply AND demand" works. Our free enterprise system works on PROFIT. That's what separates us, for now, from socialistic and communistic societies. Have a great day, |

This actually doesn't prove anything one way or the other as far as supply and demand goes. It just proves that someone is on a mission to price their competitor out of business. In fact with that kind of price differential, I'm having a tough time understanding where all your allegations of price fixing are coming from. Have a great day, |

In August, I drove thru town in the morning and saw RUG at the station across the street from the funeral home at $2.85. When I came back to the funeral home early afternoon, it was $3.09. When we left the funeral home late afternoon, it was $3.29. They didn't receive any fuel that day. They just get a call from the main office telling them to adjust the price.
