Link for Topsider

Does anybody have a link for purchasing the Topsider online?

I've done a search, but can't seem to find one, other than discussion about one.

Thanks,

Pete.

A wrench that fits your drain plug is much cheaper and will not melt when extracting hot oil.

Have a great day,

Change oil hot and change oil often.

Drill pump from Grainger for $20. Clean and fill to whatever container w/ no hand pumping required.

Have you seen the tubes melt? I'll stay away if you have or have heard of this happening.

I like the idea of not having to jack up the car each time, making it something I'm more likely to do at a frequency that's more than recommended.

My topsider has 2 different tubes. A large diameter one close to the can, joined to a smaller diameter one that goes down into the dipstick tube. The larger diameter is softer and, when exposed to hot oil, may collapse on itself and stop the flow. But no, it doesn't melt. I just removed this section of tubing and used only an inch or so that was necessary to join the smaller section to the can. Still plenty of length to do the job.

If the topsider gets you to change oil more often, then that is justification enough for using it.

If extracting hot oil (not recommended in the instructions but how else are you going to get a good change???), the Topsider™ tube gets soft and collapses a little but it still works fine to extract the oil. IMHO, if it gets you to change oil more regularly/frequently, go for it....but, don't forget to look under the car every once in a while and inspect things.

I bought a Mityvac 07201 oil extractor. It works like a charm and has over 2 gallons capacity. Here are some links that will hopefully work:

To prevent softening tube, just use common sense and just run the car for about 10 minutes. OR, use a bung on the top of the dipstick tube and don't even put plastic tube in sump. (The dipstick tube goes all way to bottom.)

I made my own topsider, using a high temp pump designed for some industrial application, its a magnetically coupled pump and works well. I use a thick walled Teflon tube to carry oil up out of the dipstick tube and its is spliced to a lower temp hose that attaches to the pump. This contraption is of my own making, I spent about $50 on the parts and I change hot oil without any hesitation.

If it is only a hose or hoses that cause problems when extracting hot oil, I would think that one could find a hose made of a more heat tolerant material?

Have a great day,

Have a great day,
Teflon is what I used for the probe that goes into the dipstick tube, I shoved a piece about 3 ft long into a clear vinyl hose I serves me well. The vinyl hose is soft but teflon will not flinch with hot oil running thru it.

heres a pic of the pump sitting on the teflon hose next to some 0.25 in poly hose for comparison. The vinyl hose is black with oil in it, Teflon is very white compared to the whitish looking PVC hose. PVC would probably melt, don't use it!

1/4" copper tubing works also. If you can afford it get the electric pump model.
I'll sell you my West Marine unit for $20.00, I just bought the new Jabsco model, nice unit

Angry Come on people, don't be so lazy!

If I can get my big shoulders under the car (without lifting the front end) and pull a little 13mm plug, then most of you can too. If it's really that bad, go down to your local farm supply store and buy some elbow length gloves so you don't get any oil on your arm.

If you can't get the guts to lay down, get a little grime on your hands, and pull a tiny little bolt out of a pan, how do you do the bigger jobs? Valve adjustment, fuel filters, check timing chain stretch, change your tranny oil, change your diff oil, or check your flex-disks for cracks, etc...

I don't care if I get to be 70 and 500lbs, I'd never be seen dead sticking a tube into my engine to do such a simple task as an oil change.
