BTW, I'll be deleting this thread, in it's entirety. If you wish, you can bump the first one.

I had also been in the market a couple weeks back.. A good used one was impossible to find I went with Metric Motors. Brand new from MB reworked and everything new with new head bolts, gasket set, shipping, ran right around $2400-$2500... :o

why did the head crack?

gvanhouten,

i have an 87 300TD, with the #14 head, and I'm curious if your head spontaneously cracked or was it due to overheating in any way. if it was from overheating, did the temp go above red line (120)?

thanks,
mike

This can only be speculation. The reason is that the cracks may develop microscopically after an overheat event. It may take many thousands of miles of driving for the cracks to widen to the point where you see symptoms.

So, the general consensus is that the head will last indefinitely if it was never overheated at any time in its life. But, unless one of us has owned the vehicle for its entire life, the theory cannot be confirmed.
