Help. Transmission won't shift into forth unless I let off the fuel pedal.
 
Anyone have any ideas? I do have a slightly erratic vac to the tranny. I'm not sure if these issues could be related or not.

Well as far as vacuum goes. Too much vacuum to the transmissions will cause early and soft shifts, too much will cause late and hard shifts. Your problem sounds more like the bowden cable to me. Look on top of you valve cover, for a cable that operates when you work the gas(err, throttle) pedal. It's basically one more adjustment and tells the tranny where to shift in relation to the pedal position. It may be too tight. Loosen it by the cable adjustment, ie; make fewer threads visible. You can just rotate it by hand. When the bowden cable is too tight, it makes the transmission think you are deep into the pedal when you are not, resulting in extremely late shifts, or having to back off the pedal to get it to shift. Worth a try..

You may want to check the vacuum valve levers that are associated with the vacuum connections on top of the valve cover.

Mine were worn out...

go into fast lane and look under "Diesel Injection" and find the Vacuum Lever.

3 things to try
 
there are 3 things to try..

1. disconnect the kick down cable located under the gas pedal...

2. loosen the bowden cable on top of the valve cover..

3. disconnect the vacum trans control on top of the fuel pump/dist
stick something in the loose vac hoses...


one of these will solve the 4th gear problem...
