newly painted, maybe.

The engine looks like it may have been subjected to a "rattle can rebuild". Notice that everything is painted silver, the pulleys, brackets, the nut that holds the PS reservior cap on, etc.

That being said, it would certainly be worth a look at, if you were geographically near the car.

I was wondering about the '91 donor too, maybe he meant an '81?
If I owned that thing I'd be installing a 5-speed tranny in it (I have access to one in a 260E) OTOH, registration in this state might be a bit complicated. If you didn't do it properly you would be receiving notices to have it smogged! Wouldn't that be fun? take it to a smog station and see if they noticed anything odd about the emissions levels. Ha!

Yeah, look at the turbo, they must have sprayed that too, and its burning off. I bet it has only a few miles on it since the "rattle can rebuild".
I would want to check this out real close before thinking about that kind of money. If it was $1000 I might gamble on it though. My '87 300D turbo was less than what they are starting bids at on this car, and it was really antiseptic!
Owning this car could be a nightmare, like take it to a shop that doesn't know exactly what it is and they wind up charging double to fix anything because its so botched up. Its definitley a DIY car.
I wonder if the cruise control works?

For some reason I think it is cool. My old SD now has 297,000 miles and everything is good. I have a 91 124 with the five cylinder 2.5 turbo and I swear the 617 seems faster. I think this is so even more at take off. Of course the 91 gets about 33 mpg compared to the 26 ion the SD. I wonder if the fuel mileage would improve much with the 124 body?

Sounds like your 2.5 needs a tune-up. I bet you're not pushing more than 7-9lbs boost, if that. Should be 13lbs. The 2.5s tend to lose boost w/ age. Btw worn wastegate spring, failing vac moduals, over-protective over-boost systems, they tend to lose boost fast. Check the boost and see what you find.
I'd never trust anyone who puts and old motor into a newer car. If they're trying that hard to save a buck who knows what other corners they cut... ...Like spray painting an entire long block silver so it looks new...

I thought it was 617 in a 107 that was too high by a couple of inches. 601/602/603 is lower than 616/617. I've seen 603 and 606 in 123, but I haven't seen 617 in 124 or 201, don't know if that's because it doesn't fit or because there's no point in doing it.

Take a can of brake cleaner to one of the parts on the engine. If it runs, you have a poor mans rebuild:

Chrome: New
Red: -100,000 miles
Yellow: -75,000
Blue: -50,000
Green: -25,000
Pink: something else is wrong...

"INTALLED IT A MERCEDEZ 1993 DIESEL MOTOR AND TRASMISSION WITH 78000 MILES"

I wonder what else the seller does NOT know about the car.

Same seller who did the "420 SDL"

This is the same guy who put a 617 in a 420SEL. It didn't make reserve because I watched it 'til the end at $3,500.

He "didn't know" the same things on that one that he "doesn't know" on this one. That one was minus the overkill of silver paint.

BEWARE but don't move from the area!
