Purolator oil filter
2 weeks ago I changed the oil filter in my 83 300 D using a Purolator Premium plus L43056 from Advance auto parts. I know, I know it's not oem but I couldn't wait. Anyway, there are 3 copper washers that came with the Purolator that I did not install because none came out with the old filter. I only installed the large rubber o-ring gasket.
It's bugging me that there are extra parts left over. Did I screw up or should they go somewhere? |

One is probably for the oil pan drain plug.

The two same-sized ones go on the oil filter housing cover. The bigger one is drain plug.

I was told that the same filter is used for many applications and that those washers are for the 'other' models.
Wierd thing is when I was messing with 126 gassers, the same question was asked and the 'other' models were OMs.

The two large washers are not utilized on the 617.
BTW, the Purolator is a POS. I've used it for several years until I cut it open. It's so bad that I threw out the remaining two brand new filters. |

A lot of the Ford guys get filters at www.fleetfilter.com. They're Wix filters though.
That Purolator would be a 51385 for $6.39.

Wix for MB
I almost installed a Wix oil filter today that came with my car purchase, until the O-ring that came with it didn't fit inside of my oil housing cover plus the Wix filter also was designed slightly different than all the other OEM brands (it didn't have that 3/4 metal part on the upper half of the filter).
Long story short, I installed the Hengst filter and the O-ring that fit and everything is great I like the German OEM for my MB Hugh
