Red dye diesel

I'm looking for first hand information here:

Has anyone here ever had their diesel checked for red dye (untaxed) fuel?

Nope.

Michigan doesn't check to make sure your car isn't spewing enormous clouds of exhaust, nor if its safe to drive, either.

I've stopped for such a roadblock on I 64

east of Richmond, VA -- they had a sign at the entrance to the weigh station that said something like "All diesel vehicles exit here," so I did, but the Trooper who was directing traffic apparently didn't realize that my '85 VW Jetta could be a diesel, so he rather abruptly waved me on past and then turned and watched as I went back on the highway, once he had smelled the fuel fumes. Here in VA, they put a lot of effort into catching farmers and construction workers who put machinery fuel (red) into their pickups.

I've never been checked but I know people who have been....and have been busted for having #2 heating oil in hteir vehicle. HUGE fine for that.

Personally I am surprised the crime situation is such that they have nothing better to do than pick on drivers.

red diesel check

Here in Montana the checks are routine in ranch country, not in town. They run PSAs on TV about it, mostly targeting diesel pickup trucks.

When I was in Oregon we worked with the DCO (diesel compliance officers) who were part of the IRS. They did not have the authority to stop vehicles we did Was there something in particular you wanted to know?

I know what you mean. In my area they should concentrate more on busting up the meth labs and leave the farmers and ranchers burning #2 fuel alone. The farmers and ranchers have a tough enough time making it. When they do bust a meth lab they give the lab tech a slap on the wrist. When they bust a farmer burning #2 they crucify him.

Won't help....Home heating oil (the RED stuff) has a chemical tracer in it that can be easily identified with field kits the revenue extortion squads use.

And some fuel additives (ag) and transmission fluids have the same petroleum dye.

Very interesting choice of words. So a person whose job is enforcing the law is an extortionist. Very interesting view point.

Have a great day,

I feel the same way about speed traps..while high crime areas get ignored...

however back to the point of the thread....I don't know the chemical they use for a tracer but its not what gives it the red look. Thats a sepereate issue. Becasue people could claim its a fuel additive giving the color...the chemical tracer would not be tracible to any fuel additive.

It's the dye - if you have red dye in your fuel at >8ppm you are busted regardless of the source. Like failing a drug test for pot and telling the MRO you take Hemp Oil - you still failed the test.

While evacuating for Rita a few weeks ago, I asked my dad to pick up some diesel in my 5gal container so I could fill my car up. We were in Lousiana. He started filling up my container, and relized that it was Farm diesel IN the AUTO diesel pump???????? He asked the attendant, she just shrugged her shoulders. I wonder if they waived the issue due to a natural disaster, just to get fuel to where it needed to be???? Anyway, I dumped it in because I needed it. OH WELL if I get in trouble!!!!
