Car sat idle for 2 months, Autotrans wouldnt go into gear at first...
 

I let my Car sit idle for two months (Non mercedes --Volvo 91 940 Turbo at 156K) while I was in Oklahoma. When I came back,I put it in Drive and it didnt even move until I gave it some Gas and put it in Reverse.
This car has been well maintained and the transmission flushed religiously and it should be in good shape...I have seen Volvos with this transmission in the junkyard with 240K on the transmissions...This model trans is a very reliable one

Why did I have to use Ooompph to make the car go into Gear? I need to take the car on a long trip this weekend..

We must have some trasnmission guru out there...

..........because the transmission was sleeping for two months...........and now you had to kick it out of bed and get it working immediately...........and that's why you had to use Ooooommpph.

How about a leak in the check valve that prevents ATF from draining out of the torque converter and back to the tranny sump? A slow leak in the check would never be noticable overnight, but could be in 2 months.

If it shifts fine forget about it. Its an old trans it ain't going to be perfect.

The fluid probably drained down a bit, it did sit for 2 months.

Because everybody knows there's only 3 plenums! :D

Exactly. That happens routinely on Dodge motorhomes I have owned with the 727 transmission. The secret is to put it in neutral for a minute or so before putting it into gear. On the 727, neutral circulates the fluid into the convertor. It doesn't work that way on all transmissions. It's not a serious problem.

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought that someone had left an MB diesel idling in their driveway for two months.... :o

I think my uncles cavalier does that, when it has sat for a while (not all that long, days usually) and he starts it up and puts it in drive, it revs for a moment, then starts to move a little, then does normally(very delayed reaction). It didn't do this when it was newer. I'm assuming torque converter as well. Its the pre-historic GM 3-speed auto tranny with the 2.2liter ecotec 4cyl gasser. Engine runs fine (though in cold weather it complains about starting, lots of cranking when its real cold out...has done that since around 85k), tranny is weird sometimes. 108k on the clock (its 10 years old) All things considered it runs pretty good, but it has to be the most stiff tin can like cars ever. I'd never be able to drive one..... :rolleyes: its just too unpleasant/weird. :D

I have a 88 740gle wagon and used it for my wheels in seattle wash. I drv a truck up their 2 times a month. didn't use it during the bad weather. and some times I had to let it run a few minutes to get going .I checked a local volvo shop and the guy said it was a leak down from the torqe converter from inside check valve back to the oil pan. so when you restart the car the pump has to refill it and its no big deal if you can live with it I have had it for 10 years it has 325K and has not failed my yet.
