Thumbs up Oil filter housing shaft O-rings?

Those two o-rings at the bottom... do those help keep pressure constant? I'm thinking to order a few sets on my next big order.

Reason I brought this up is my oil pressure on the SD (the needle) fluctuates at idle from 2bar to 2.5bar. So I believe I have a small leak somewhere. I know the hoses to the cooler leak some but could it be enough to cause that problem?

Petrified O rings are the likely issue. However I saw little change on my cars with them replaced...but the way I see it...if its rubber it should be flexible....if its not it needs replaced.

If your hoses are leaking its a good idea to replace them ASAP...a hose failing can dump the entire contents of the oil pan before you know there is a problem...

BTW the oil rings brought my HOT oil idle pressure up a smidge...not a whole lot. Mine were so brittle I grabbed onto them with the dikes (wire cutters) and they just shattered into pieces (literally).

Replace them regularly becuase where they reside, it gets sorta hot.

Make sure you oil cooler is clean and the hoses are in good working order. My idle oil pressure is around 1.5-1.9 bar depending on how much the turbo has been heating things up

They definitely should be kept in good shape. Ages and ages ago they came with an oil filter, but I probably haven't seen that for 20 years or more.

I have let them get away from me before and turn brittle. Upon changing them I have never noticed any difference in oil pressure, but maybe my gauge sight is not as calibrated as some of you.

Good luck,

I found a great used set of those oil lines, they still have adhesive on the very end of the metal tubes! So they're decently new on this vehicle, no leaks at all. That is getting done before my PS pump rebuild on the SD

Heck, they're so inexpensive I may just change them every or every other oil change.

i doubt

that minor leakage of the oil lines would make the oil pressure jump around. is it dripping on the ground or are you just concluding they are leaking because of the fluctiuations?

This sounds more like you either have a marginal chassis-engine ground or loose connection at the sending unit on the side of the oil filter housing.

Oh the oil cooler lines drip some, there is oil on them from where they connect. Next big project for the SD are those lines.

I'll check the wire to that sender. All my other gauges work fine.

I have been buying my filters at NAPA - the German brand, I can't remember which one, and they come with the o rings. I haven't changed them each time, but I kept them for later. My nearby NAPA store almost always has the filters in stock.

Got these in today on the SD and the L, no more fluctuating gauge on the SD at idle...

The o-rings I removed were VERY brittle and fell apart after removing them. They barely sealed down within the oil housing.

This is a smart move for anyone. I picked up twelve of these o-rings for the next oil changes on these cars.

I put new ones on both of our cars back around February....4 oil changes later mine are "getting hard", not brittle yet, but getting there, I'll change them in the next change probably. I would say once a year or every 15k miles or something. My oil pressure did not change with them replaced however, real hot its 1.5 bar, normal its 2. Has always been that way.....

The old ones from both cars did shatter into little pieces when I used needle nose pliers at them. I thought they were metal rings originally before I read on here that they were indeed o-rings of rubber!
