Rusty injectors on a 617...problem?

Okay, my engine is running fine, and I don't believe I have faulty injectors....however.

They are SO RUSTY (externally), it's like they were found on a beach somewhere and then pu in my engine (most of the enine looks fine).

I was wondering, could this lead to operational issues? Should I just take them out and clean them with a wire brush on the outside, or is it maybe time to get a new set.

Thanks,

Pete.

Its whats inside that counts...........unless the car is running well why pull them and then need new heat shields and return line....

The heat shields look like washers and the return lines are very small fuel lines connected to each injector that are braided on the outside.

Oh, that's cool then.

I just ordered those recently to replace the braided wire, and the (what I thought were washers) come with the lines. Might as well clean up the injectors if I have all the other stuff.

Anybody know what the hard fuel line setup woud cost to replace on this engine? That part is rusty as well.

Thanks,

Pete.

How about a good used set....surely someone who frequents the pick and pulls can get you a deal...those typically never wear out.

Sure.

As long as there isn't a speck of rust on them. I'm trying to get rid of it in my engine bay.

Guess I could do some yard hunting.

Anyone know what they typically cost otherwise (thanks, BHD).

Pete.

You did not say that.
A perfect ebay line.
Those typically never wear out.

All the wear is on the inside.

The metal hardlines I assume he meant....injectors most definately do wear out.

Those typicly last forever unless they either rub together and wear through or fracture...

I've not heard of them wearing out before....However do please correct me if you have seen them wear out internally.

i personally

would not pull good working injectors for cosmetic reasons. if you cant stand the rusty look, spray them with rust binder or wd 40. you will find plenty on one of these old babes to spend your money and sweat on w/o doing things that dont need doing. you aren't going for concours are you?

my $.02

Tom's $.02 is as good as gold on this one. Just spray them with WD40 or PB blaster from time to time. You do not want to risk any of the "bad stuff" or even "pain in the backside" stuff by removing them for looks.
Leaks, stripped threads, dropping something in the injector hole , etc.....
Choose your battles......

Thanks, guys.

I did sort of want to inspect the spray tips, but I'll take the advice and leave well enough alone....man they're rusty

Leave 'em alone. You can't tell ZIP about the "spray tips" (the nozzles) unless the injector is on a tester and you're pushing fuel through the nozzle under pressure.

FWIW, the 'spray tip' looks like a flat disk with a very, very, very tiny hole in it. Damage there is very bad and, unless you nave a really good reason (ie; poor performance, missing, white smoke etc) the injectors are better off left screwed into the head, where nothing can get to that area except what God and Stuttgart intended.
