Engine Flush, by Gunk.
 

I bought a container of Engine Flush™, made by Gunk®.

The container says to pour it into the <cold> engine, and let it idle for five minutes before changing the oil.

AAANNNyway, I was just curious if anyone else has used this stuff in the past, and if it is safe for my little Benzo. Also, I'm wondering if it will be alright if I run this stuff in the engine when it's warm (I just got back from grocery shopping)

I use it each time I change the oil...I let it idle for 2-3 minutes and immediately topside it out along with my oil..doesnt seems to hurt so far.

I think its a bad idea to use stuff like that...why? It loosens crap sticking to block...which gets sucked up by oil pump and circulated through engine...

and it does so very quickly...why is this a big issue? Remember that oil filters do not filter 100% of the oil.

I preffer to use synthetic which cleans slowly and change it while hot after a drive....

a clean engine it might not hurt...but one thats gunked up (no pun intended) can send a rush of nasty stuff to the pan

I am in total agreement with BHD on this. If you have to use flush, then you are not changing oil often enough. The very best flush you can use is a universal grade oil such as Delo 400, Shell Rotella T or Mobil Delvac. These oils are especially blended for diesels and have lots of extra cleaners. A few short, hot changes with one of these oils will clean it SAFELY.

ok, no more flush then...

I believe that product contains mostly kerosene.

Just use a high-detergent oil and change it every 3,000 - 4,000 miles.

Not to pound on the podium, but from personal experience. I thought this was a good idea until it resulted in a spun rod bearing on a truck. The problem is that some of the flush stays in the system and damages the oil properties.

(It makes a pretty good tool cleaner and I also use it to clean the oil return lines, from the air cleaner, when doing an oil change.) ;)

WELL, I am very anal about oil changes, I change the oil in my 240 every 3K.

I will admit that I am about 1200 miles late for this oil change, but meh....I'm doing it now, so there.

I won't use the engine flush, then, I'll do something else with it, like pour it in my well or use it to light my front lawn on fire. :)

A wise decision, but not down your well please. :)

Just thought I'd add an anecdote... My father (15 yrs experience as a Jaguar mech) insisted that I should never use engine flush on my 8 yr old 95k miler BMW... I was young and stupid at the time and went ahead and did it... The result was a clean but noisy engine. Essentially what happened was that 'Gunk' that had built up behind the hydraulic tappets, in the oil galleries preserved oil pressure and the engine ran quietly. On flushing, all of the gunk got removed and subsequently the top end became chattery and over a period of time you could hear my car from two streets away... I subsequently rebuilt the engine...at a large cost... hence from my experience... If it aint broke, dont try to fix it!!! Occasionally I would recommend using cheaper oil for quick and frequent oil changes then back to normal...

I use nice expensive oil, I used to use Wal-Mart El Cheapo, but I mentioned it on the forum here, and I was accosted by half a dolzen people. Now I used the good stuff.
