Fuel pump or electric problem

I was changing the inline fuel filter and made a mess all over my garage. Usually the fuel stops just drips a bit once line disconnected, but this time as soon as I disconnected the line the fuel continually flows all over the place. I put my finger to stop it and felt pressure. The inline filter connects to fuel thermostat which licks. I order one; will be here tomorrow, until then no car.
I was wondering what determines the fuel to flow, is there a short somewhere or the pump is always hot? I want to make sure that this won't cause other problems. A mechanic told me yesterday that the fuel thermostat start licking because I have continued fuel flow. Somehow I don't believe him since the thermostat is made to have fuel flow thru, or?

Also I want to ad that because of this site, not only I've saved a lot of money, but learned very important things about my car and the way to keep it at it's best. I drove diesel for 14 years(since I started driving really) My first car ever at 18 was a Peugeot 505 turbo diesel and move to Mercedes Benz 240D, 300Ds, 190D and now the 300D Turbo.
This is only my experience on this site ....Cheers

Depending on the fuel level, I would suspect gravity since the tank in the trunk is higher than where the fuel line connects at the filter.

It is half tank now but I remember changing the filter last time with a full tank of gas and fuel never came out like this, it kind of dripped for few seconds then it stoped.
Also an update I found a great mechanic, he will replace the O ring inside the fuel thermostat for 20 bucks hehe, also they have my breake buster vacuum hose by 3PM today so I'm game

There is no electric pump in your car. The fuel level in the tank is higher than the hose you're working on as Sam said.

You can bypass the fuel thermostat while you're waiting for the replacement o-ring. Connect the line from the small filter directly to the pump on the side of the injection pump.

Sixto, cool thanks, I won't worry about the fuel anymore, perfect
I just updated my previous posting about the O ring, just find out about it, canceled my order online. The problem was that when I opened the fuel thermostat housing I broke with my elbow the valve from the brake buster vacuum hose. They have the hose by 3PM today for 40 bucks, and I have my girlfriends car since she is working, so no need to by pass anything anymore, is just that I really hate to drive a Scion Xa even for a day ..

fuel pressure

I'm pretty certain there's supposed to be more than a small drip coming from the injector line when disconnected and the engine is cranked over (wouldn't start,POOR performance and very hard starting prior to fuel flow check),even after I hand primed system. Fuel can be seen in primary filter, not full, but mostly. Do I need to replace the injector pump, or what?

For this problem, I would suspect a clogged fuel strainer screen in the bottom of the tank. Underneath the car and fuel tank you will see a flex hose that screws into what appears to be a flange. This flange is the fuel strainer. To get an idea what it looks like, check in the parts area of Fastlane. Also, a search will give you pics, the size of socket, etc... to remove it for cleaning.

ok, thanks. I disassembled and CLEANED all gp parts 2day, and it startyed & ran, but real crapper performance. Put new primary & secondary fuel filters on it too. I'll figure these diesel MBs out pretty soon, but only with guidance from people who've "been there & done that".Thanks for your advice, I'll be dropping the tank 2moro I guess. Any more help will be appreciated more than you may realize. johnathanyother@yahoo.com (& messenger)
