81 240D Difficult Starting
Hello all; i've had this car for several years & am very happy with the MB Diesels. I've developed a problem where the car will not crank even in mildly cold (ie. <60 F). I've read the postings about checking the glow plug resistance & the glow plug relay.
Where is the glow plug relay & what does it look like? My mechanic says the glow plugs are OK, but are not receiving any power. Should I just replace all four glow plugs and the relay? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Dale Auten |

The relay is located on the drivers side inner fender well under the hood .It is a Black box approx. four by two inches and has a cover that slips off on the top which will have a long Fuse in it which is probablly broken and is the cause of your problem .I am pretty sure about the 81 but if it is earlier it may have the fuse in a small distribution box at the back of the firewall under the hood and in which case the relay will be under the drivers side inside kick panel .

The glow plug relay is on the drivers side fender well as described above. When you take the cover off it, you will see the strip fuse. Sometimes they get little cracks thar are hard to see without removing the fuse. Use caution as the fuse is directly connected to the battery, live at all times. If the problem is not the fuse, it could be the relay itself. It is also possible for the problem to be in the ignition switch although that is not very common.

Data needed
Quote:
#1. I agree, check the relay fuse. #2. Due to age, it is reasonable to consider new glow plugs. #3. I presume your valves are adjusted correctly = direct effect upon starting. #4. your starter should have started the engine after 20 - 30 second crank, even without glow plugs, if it is not weak and failing.

Poor terminology
Dale, quoting your post you say "where the car will not crank even in mildly cold" Saying the car will not crank means that you have starter/battery problems - you turn the key and very little happens. Is that your problem? Or is your problem not one of cranking but of actual firing up and running? It helps to use the correct terms and it looks like you should have said , where the car will not start even in mildly cold conditions.
