it's far simpler to just take entire cars and park them in your yard for later obsessive gathering...

Back in 1987 my (no longer current) DH found a Fiat Spider convertable that he just fell in love with and had to have. We bought it for $700. It was in bad shape.
When we got it home (apartment complex) I started going over it and found the front brakes had no calipers and only one rotor.
The Austin area had a few decent pull it yourselves so we went out looking. Only one place even had a car like ours but it had calipers! The car was surrounded by Fire Ant hills. I had no idea I was allergic to fire ants!
I was told they bite, but didn't really understand how bad it could be.
I was bitten enough that I ended up needing emergency help while still in the yard.
The owner gave us the calipers and they rode in the ambulance with me.

As an aside, I worked on that car for about 6 months, redoing most of the electrical, full brakes, and replacing the convertable top. It was a really fun car to drive.

Most "obssessed" thing you have ever done while parts hunting...

Drove a little over 200 miles to NJ to pick up a complete 240D motor and trans and carry it back in one piece in a beater 4 banger 89 Mustang hatchback.

^^^^^^Don't say that.

Just say, whenever he had to go to the toilet, he had to take his hat off.

You are supposed to be polite here on DD.

As to the question here,

I was in the Mercedes junkyard in the pouring rain, trying to separate a European delivery badge off a W108 grille.

This was about a month ago.

Today up here, there is a REALLY bad snowstorm, just now, and the news reports are of cars crashing, wrecking, going off the roads everywhere.
Clueless drivers all over the place. VERY good day to stay inside.

When I found the euro interior that I now have I was like

" A euro.. in a local junk yard... I have only read about these on the forum... I'm pulling everything euro from this sucker!"

Not referencing any particular car or part but back in the day (late 70's-early 80's), you could actually go into a junk yard and rummage around for your stuff. We'd always be searching for juicy V8's to swap into unsuspecting cars. Well, this yard we frequented had a habit of stacking cars on top of one another and of course, the car we wanted to pick over was always on the bottom and the surly yard men didn't want to always be fork lifting cars for us kids. Anyway, we got to where we would simply get under and push the top car off onto the ground (it's not that hard for two people to topple a mostly stripped car off another. Heck, sometimes one of us would be working under a stack of cars and the other would come climbing all over them looking and knock a couple to the ground by accident. That was some dumb stuff we did right there...). We'd then run like Hell to another side of the yard in case someone saw us then sneak back over a while later and see what we found.
