what is my transmission capacity?

I drained my transmission on my 1980 300sd, and filled it up and it only took 2.5 quarts. Can this be right? i didn't believe it so I took the pan off to make sure I drained everything that time, but the same thing happened. Only 2.5.

that is about what it holds if you don't drain the torque converter. all togeather it takes about 7quarts.

What model car? I think they're vastly all 7 quarts or so from that era...

There is a torque converter that holds about half the full quantity, and remember the trans cooler and lines. Changing the tranny fluid without draining the torque converter is basically pointless.
Drive it up on ramps, pull the pan plug and tc plug and drain them for a good long time. Some people even loosen the cooler lines and drain the cooler too. And then some people even do all of this, and drain yet again to get a full flush. Remember there is a valve body/pickup filter and pan gasket you need to replace.
My regimen is to vac out a quart via Mityvac from the top, add a qt of Trans-X, drive for a month(a month's worth of driving for me is less than 100 miles, but it's city so the trans shifts a lot), and then do a slow drain and full tranny service w/ syn fluid(I don't drain the cooler). I have only changed my fluid twice in around 15k.

Dunno, but if it's a 722.xxx transmission on a 617 turbo engine it doesn't take 11.5 qts.

My '85 owner's manual says

auto trans: fed version-initial fill 7.7 US Qt, Fluid change: 6.6 US Ot.

So, in effect, 11.5 would be wayy too much. Talk to Boneheaddoctor to get the finite requirement.

BTW if you overfill you'll blow internal valve body seals. That means new tranny.
