There is more middle and lower distillates in crude than higher ones. The reason for more gasoline (higher distillate) comming out of a barrel of crude is due production demand. It is cheaper to produce (consumes less energy) diesel than pump gasoline. First run gasoline (naptha) is useless for current sprark ignition engines.Pump gasoline needs to be reformed (cracked) and blended with other hydrocarbons. It needs to be reformed. Just because they are making more gasoline out of crude, doen't mean it's more efficent or costs less to produce. Now if you want to talk about ULSD.....
U.S. Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Prices http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/gasdiesel.asp http://www.chevron.com/products/learning_center/ Forgot to mention... It also depends on your base crude your distilling/refining http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/analysis_publications/oil_market_basics/Refining_text.htm After simple distillation alone, the output from a crude oil like Arab Light would be about 20 percent of lightest, gasoline-like products, and about 50 percent of the heaviest, the residuum. After further processing in the most sophisticated refinery, however, the finished product output is about 60 percent gasoline, and 5 percent residuum.
