new michelins steering wheel grind
 

Wow what a difference a new set of Michelins make. No more vibrations between 65 and 80 or at least they are greatly reduced.

I got my 124 service manual cds today. I have a grinding in my steering wheel. After reading the service manual I have come to the conclusion that I need to put dielectric grease on the contacts that slide. However I would like others who have had the same problem to give me an opinion before I go pull the airbag.

possibility is a partially crushed crush zone. i had one in a saab once. i changed out the steering wheel and in getting it off i used the old fashoned hit the steering stud with a big hammer while pulling the steering wheel method. well i hit a little too hard. it eventually wore down and stopped rubbing.

that method always worked on my old 'merican cars.

I had a similar sound on the SDL. It's most definitely the sliding contacts on the slipring. The sould is not exactly a grinding sound but closer to a rubbing noise that comes from the central hub.

I just cleaned the contacts and the slipring when the steering wheel was off to change the combination switch.

Yes you are right. I would describe it more as rubbing. The service manual used the term grinding. Thanks for validating my diagnosis.
