As for differences in prices of parts, well, let's just say that I just have to do with the prices of the W126 parts. Small sacrifice for much bigger gains.

I must agree. When I bought the Sd it was repainted a few years earlier and looked great. Did not look underneath/put up on a lift before buying, it wasn't until I owned it that the extent of the internal rust became appearent. The outside of the body shows less rust as a general rule on 126's (braverichard, your experience does seem more broad than mine) but this is the very reason why these cars must be closely looked over prior to buying. The front support rod attaching to a nest of rust was much like driving on extremely dry rotted tires. You never know if/when it will break and how bad the consequence will be. I'm not saying the 126's are flawed, just that I was not an educated buyer. Certainly it did not rust that much during my ownership, I bought it that way. If the body looked like crap, I would have suspected something like this and looked closer, or just walked away since it didn't have the same appeal. I'll re-phase: Generally 126's show less rust than 123's however the rust that is not easily visible is equally potential on both 123's and 126's, and more of a safety issue.

Again i like the sporty ness of the w123 but i prefer the beefiness of the w126. Also with the rust discussion my SD is an 81' and its lifted on a rack almost weekly and i have yet to see any rust. aside from one piece of the quarter panel that was damaged before I took posession of the car. I have yet to play around with the 126 off road status, but it is an awsome freeway cruiser. it likes to hang at right about 70 MPH and handles really well there. A common flaw in the models that have cruise contol is that it fails after so many miles that is one dissapointment. all in all i like both, i drive both, and they are both really great cars.
