That's essentially the setup that I have on my Trooper. I have 4 gauge cable connecting to an SB175 quick connect on the front bumper. The jumper cables (only 20') have a matching SB175 connector on them. I was going to share but I didn't figure that most Mercedes owners would want that kind of connector mounted outside of their cars. I didn't get the dust cap that is in that pic though... I don't think that it is worth the extra $200.

I've had a pair of these cables for about 20 years and the nice thing about them is you don't have to have the cars grille to grille. I think I paid $80 back then...That seems like a deal now....

I've got the 20-foot 4-guage $21 jumpers from Wal-Mart. Nice and mean looking :-)

cables

i have set like the tow drivers use, the car end connects to a plug receptical under the bumper or any other descreet location. the other end is connected to the battery terminals, the main cable is very long at can be connected with cars parked front bumber to rear bumper, and it could be the jumper or the one getting jumped. i had them on my BMW and when i sold it i removed the entire set, it all is in a nice nylon bag, if any one wants it let me know, send me an email if you want pictures before you make offer, when it was on the BMW i only used it once. i had dual batteries and a 135 amp alternator, so i thought that would be an excellent accessory. it also had a 1000watt power inverter to power various tools and appliances i used,

I got mine from Napa, which got them from DeleGard Tools. Great, heavy duty set.

Keep your eyes open for jumper cables that "look thick" but actually the inside wire gauge is something like 14awg (small!)

They use thick insulation to hide the actual thickness of the wire and also the wire when it glows red hot from being overloaded

We have a pair of 0awg ones I think...I keep a cheap-o pair in the 300SD becuase I often end up jump starting others and I have all the time in the world when helping out someone else. The thin wires and crap clamps work...you just gotta let the batteries equalize.

I wouldn't want to connect a stone dead battery to a perfectly charged one with TOO much awg wire...the alternator on the charged car would go "CRAP!"...gotta have a little vdrop under heavy current sometimes Helps out the jumping car.

I bought a really good quality set with 4 ga wire, 16 ft long with really good clamps. They've got a lot of use over the roughly 15-20 years I've had them. I consider myself a pretty serious DIY'er, but I wouldn't bother making a pair when you can buy a good set, probably for less $$. But check out the quality carefully - cheap cables just waste space in your trunk. If the clamp halves are a single piece of stamped sheet metal ( like an alligator clip), keep looking unless you only need them for jump starting lawn mowers and golf carts.

boat cables

years ago i had 50 foot length of welding cable with vice grips connected to 8 D batteries that we could pass to another boat out to sea not many tow trucks 50 miles offshore
Nowadays most commercial boats run generators with consta volts to charge batteries Ah for the "good ole days" but with modern conviences

Another option - carry a spare diesel battery in trunk behind the wheel well. Added weight helps wheel traction too. Got into the habbit when having alternator problem couple of yrs ago. This has paid off a few times for me. And what I"d like to do is wire it to the main battery too.

amazing that the link to snap-on still works after a year.

I "lost" my jumper cables years ago (I forget who "borrowed" them). I have two battery chargers and have considered keeping one in the trunk until I buy cables - something I probably won't do until I decide one of my batteries is starting to loose its ooomph. (yes, I know, batteries can fail while you are in the grocery store; I've had it happen).

PS: Decent Jumper Cables - A great gift idea!

Go to any Pilot, Loves of Flying J truck stop and you will find some really nice and well made truckers cables! I've never had any problems with mine and believe me, I've pulled a lot of juice through them!!!! mine are good for about 250 amps and do come in handy at times!!!!
