Dis engine got riddim'!
 

So I am going to borrow my dad's 83 300d with 430k on the odo. very clean ride. I am using this yellow turbo slug while I do some repairs on my 82 300sd. When I fired it up today it took a couple of tries to actually run (has't been driven in a week or two) and while idling it started surging slightly, I believe this is called "hunting" it is very rhythmic and noticeable. So just what effect will this have on the old beast(but what a beauty!) and how is it that I go about a fix?
Also high beam indicator and high beams do not work. the normal beams go dark when switch is engaged.

when some of the glow plugs are bad it'll run like that till it warms up a bit.

It's possible that the idle loop adjustment bolt perhaps know as a "Governor Idler Adj. Pin" on the IP is not set right or worn. Old adjustment bolts are silver, new ones (better) are gold. They contain a spring and their objective is to reduce/eliminate surging at idle. They can wear out or be adjusted incorrectly.


As for your lights, have you checked the fuses, the control stalk switchs between high beam and low beam and uses a different set of fuses. 10 year + older fuses can look ok, but are toast. Replace them all if 10+ years old.
Could even be the headlights are burn out, seems unlikely for high beam tho.

If you pull the combo swith towards you it would light both high and low, does that do anything?

Otherwise combo switch is bad, unlikely.
