Chaning the oil pan, as easy as it looks?

Is changing the oil pain on a 1982 300D as easy as it looks?

Just drain the oil and then remove all the allen-bolts, install new pan with gasket? Anything I should be aware of? Anything I should check for while I've got the pan off?

There's a decent sized dent in mine, and I want to eliminate the pan as the possible source of a small oil leak (I know it could be something else above, but this will at least take the pan and gasket out of the equation).

Thanks,

Pete.

Not sure on yours but the pan may not want to come off w/out raising the motor a bit. Is it he main pan or the piggy back one?

sounds

like the small pan.

this is about as easy as it gets mechanically. just be sure to clean out the heads of the allen bolts and be sure to push the allen up all the way inside and dont let it fall down any or you will strip out the head. make sure the car is safely raised before getting under it.

Very easy job. Engine does not have to be raised. Look up the torque spec for the bolts. I don't remember the exact spec, but not as tight as you might think.

Thanks, guys.

Anything I should check for while I've got it open?

Pete.

Easy job. Don't over torque the oil pan bolts. Check for any debriss in the pan. check the condition of the oil pump chain and sprocket, look for damage. Consider replacing the oil seperator drain tube check valve if installed. Now would be a good time to replace the turbo oil drain bushings. If the lower on into the upper oil pan is hard and difficult to remove then have the oil pan off is the way to do it. Consider these 3 items.

617 engine, replacing the oil separator check valve in the upper oil pan.
