You're not going to believe this, 1982 300D
So, I decided to check the heater blower on my car (1982 300D) even though the previous owner said that the brushes had been replaced in the last couple of years.
Well, when I took out the old brushes, they were just tiny stubs with copper wire stuck to them. ....but wait, there's more! As I was inspecting the unit, turning it around, two more pieces of brush fell out on each side (3 total on each side). Someone had taken the stuby remains of other brushes and packed them in with the stuby brush with the copper wire attached in the back of each "pack." I could tell that they weren't each just one that broke into three pieces because each piece had the grooved and curved end, indicating contact with the center post of the motor. I'm going to give the previous owner a call, because he's probably taking his daughter's 124 to the same mechanic who did this "repair." No wonder the darn thing kept on sputtering out. He might have, also, been using some super cheap replacement brushes. Not all brush material is the same. (Hmmm, $2 brushes and 2 hour shop labor charge each year.) Did he charge for a "new" motor?

where did you find your brushes at-I need a set myself(stretched the springs to get mine working for now)?

For those who are mechanically challenged (i.e., me) these books are very well written. It's like having someone stand next to you over the engine bay, giving you simple lay-man's instructions for a specific task....Unlike Haynes or Chilton's which seem to skip over steps by assuming that you know how to do certain things (which I don't). I was playing around by taking apart the old voltage regulator that I just replaced, and I noticed what appears to be the exact same springs....that is springs in the VR appear to be the same springs they use in the blower. I can mail them to you if you want (I'll float the stamp :-) ). Pete.
