92 300D W124 fuel gauge not accurate?

When I fill up the car it goes to the top. As i use the gas it lowers to half tank. When I restart the car it goes to 3/4 and then falls to low levels etc.

The only way I know to fill up is when the red reserve light comes on.

Sending unit or ?

Has anyone had this problem?

Even an educated guess is something. Anyone had this?

I am going to get a new sending unit. See if that is the problem.

Has anyone ever had any problems with the gauge in the cluster?
