78 300 sl wont shut off??

greetings everyone, I just bought a 78 300sl diesel today at an auction. It has been sitting for awhile but after installing a new battery it fired right up.Engine runs fine and trans seems good-the problem--It wont shut off...When I turned the key off it continues to run.Is this a common problem? Anyone have any ideas? I had to open the hood and push against the throttle linkage to shut it down manually.I am new to this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...dave

300SL? that is odd, are you sure about the model? i am almost 100%sure they did not make a 300SL diesel in '78

I have the title in my hand-It says 1978 300sl and it is a diesel-the title matches the vin so I am guessing its a 78 300sl diesel? any clue on how to shut the crazy thing off??

sounds like a vacuum problem

I believe that your shut off valve should be on the back side of your Injection pump, on the end closest to the firewall.

It would help if you knew what it looked like.

basically, what's happening is one of two things:

1. the shut off valve is faulty and is not working.

2. there is a leak in the vacuum system that is preventing the shut off valve form working.

Nothing that you cannot assess with the help of a Mityvac vacuum testing device, available at Autozone for about 25 to 30 bucks.

ok now after reading some previous posts i think I have a vaccume pump problem- My brakes suck also- seemed like no power- Is it more likely the pump is out or just leaking lines-whats a pump or a rebulid kit run?

Maybe the "D" got scraped up a bit to look like an "L"? Unless this is an odd euro model, something is amiss. Superdavesbenz ... what does your car look like?
