Bad news for a 1995 300D

Friend of mine had an oil leak and seized the engine. Car is in great shape otherwise. I have some questions on the best thing to do. She wanted to see if the engine can be rebuilt (cannot be turned even with a bar on the wrench) but I am suggesting to get a rebuilt or used engine.

1) Where to get a good rebuilt or used engine?

2) How hard is it to replace for a good DIY'er?

3) What years can the replacement engine be?

Thank you - Dennis

Very sad. 96-97 may work also with minor modifications since they are also non turbo. 98-99 would be sweet with modifications. Good luck. Restoring the car is definitely worth it but evaluate the quality of the body before you put in an engine. If you have any rust or suspension is badly worn it might be better to look for a good condtion southern car. Their was a great deal on auto trader I missed a month ago.

Good luck

The 96-97 OM606 had an ECU that could vary the amount of fuel injected at the IP - I'm pretty sure if you are going to get a 96 or later engine you are going to have to get the WCU and its associated wiring harness.

E300D engines are hard to find - PGA had a couple in stock several months ago and as I recall they were asking 3-4K dollars for one.

i would talk

to mike at metric motors. it is possible that run dry on oil might not damage some expensive parts and you might be able to replace just bearings and reassemble. this would possibly be cheaper than even a used motor. he is very helpful and very knowledgable and as near as i can tell very honest.

Not to be a vulture, but if she'd like to just get rid of it as is, let me know. I've been looking for my next diesel project.
Cheers,
-Matt-

I've seen these engines on Ebay from time to time. I found one doing a quick search. Looks a little dirty.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7983068898

"All our parts are used, tested and in working condition before shipping, unless otherwise indicated. We offer NO GUARANTEE, NO REFUNDS, NO EXCHANGE. All sales are final. All items are sold "as is", unless otherwise indicated." + low feedback does not inspire confidence!

I bought an engine sight-unseen, on-line, from Cherry Auto, out of Toledo, Ohio a couple of years ago. They offered to ship free and offered also a 90 day money back guarantee.

The engine was delivered on-time, but when I unwrapped the crate, I discovered the valve cover was holed, oil pan holed, engine mounts caked with mud as though they dragged it on the ground before putting it on the crate.

They told me over the phone before I purchased the engine that they ran and tested it, however upon my inspection there was no evidence they ever ran it, in fact, it looked like it had been out in the weather a very long time!

I was pissed, but I realized that the trouble I'd have to go through to return it would be futile, so I swapped oil pan, and valve cover from the dean engine and put it in the car and the engine ran like silk and with no problems.

Since you are in New Jersey, I would look into Potomac German down in Maryland. They, I believe have a good reputation. I see they have two 606's for sale, and they offer a guarantee.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing........BB

Potomac sold me a used 603 head, it looked like a chop shop had been working on it, the PC chamber hold down collars were crapped up like someone must have tried using a cold chisel trying to turn them and gave up. The factory tool wouldn't fit the slots were so buggered. The machine shop had to weld nuts onto them to get them off, adding to the rebuild cost. There was a guarantee but one would think they could have described it better as a very rough head instead of just that it came with return rights if it was cracked. Turned out I spoke with their sales office in FL that didn't even see the head, it shipped out of MD. From my experience I suggest one ask them to personally have an item described carefully and accurately before you send a payment.
