Question Loss of power/Loss of Tach/ABS Light on

We own a 1993 Mercedes 300D that has been wonderful. However, over the past year it has developed an odd problem. The problem is intermittent and we can not relate it to any particular activity, time of day, or weather.

From time to time - sometimes at start up - sometimes in the middle of driving, the ABS light lights up and the tachometer stops (just sits idle). We lose power when this happens and have a hard time accelerating up hills.

We took the car to our mechanic and they convinced us that we needed 5 new fuel injectors and the problem would be solved. We spent around $1,000 and the problem was not solved. It seems like this must be an electrical issue.

Does anyone have any idea what this may be? And on a related note: Does anyone know a GOOD Mercedes diesel mechanic in the SF Bay area?

Classic symptoms of OVP relay failure. The following thread should provide all the needed details....

1993 300D 2.5l L-5 Tachometer gauge

haha you got dooped out of 1000 bucks.

That's the reason why I despise mechanics, I do not know whether or not I can trust their opinions/recommendations.

Take everything with a grain of salt, I say.

Talking Thank You Tim!

We are ordering the part today. Called the shop and let them know that there is an answer to the problem and it is around $80. They offered to put the part in. (Thanks. But it actually looks simple enough!)

We are so relieved to hear that our car is only $80 away from health and happiness.

The shop with the best reputation for Diesels in the SF Bay Area is Mercedes Select Service in Milpitas.

Patrick Tan does things his way. He won't accept your car to adjust the valves. He'll insist on a full 15K mile service. That's how he works and people come back. Good luck getting an appointment.
