I'm impressed
I was on hiway 401 and a guy in his 20's driving a Buick Park Avenue looked at me and laughed, he took off and I decided to show him a thing or two. All I can say I'm impressed with the SD, my baby kept up on and out handled it on the turns. Just under curiosity how fast should these cars go at 4500rpm in overdrive?

At 4500RPM with a 3.07 diff and standard tires, probably near 100mph, between 97 and 100 I'd say. FAST.

The speed of a 1985 300SD with stock tires would be approx. 108 mph at 4500 rpm on level ground.

hey 635 csi.have you ever taken the 401 between guelph and kitchener?since the hiway upgrds a number of years ago its a great stretch for "speed trials".i actually got my 76 300d darn close to 100 mph there.had to throttle back though when one of the backseat passengers complained that seeing the road passby under the car was making them dizzy.LOL

Even we like to drive fast once and a while. And yes, I always make good time on the 401 between London and Guelph, usually have the cruise set at about 140 klicks and I get passed by plenty of cars along that stretch, at least until I hit Kitchner and traffic starts getting heavy so I'll go with the flow. Usually takes me about an hour and forty-five to get from Sarnia to Guelph Line Road.

I have to tell this on Mike even though he might pistol whip me for telling it on a public forum.
I have met up with Mike on several occasions when he was passing through Texas. We communicate via mobile phone while he's on the road so that we both can time our breakfast, dinner or whatever since I have a good distance to drive for the meeting myself. From these conversations I can tell you that he covers highway as if he were on the German Autobahn regardless of what he's driving. The funniest vision I have in my head from these meetings was the first time I met him face to face which was only about 3 or 4 days after the World Trade Center attack. He was coming cross country from California to one of the deep south states, Georgia I think. He was in a marked Border Patrol unit on the road the night before our meeting for breakfast the next morning. During our conversation he was East of El Paso as I recall. If you've ever been on that road then you can understand that 100MPH or more, in all practicality, is not too fast for such nice, open road. At that point I did not know that he was in a Border Patrol unit, I thought he was in his own car. I asked him if the DPS had minded his rapid crossing of the desert. His reply was something like, "oh we saw those guys a ways back and it took them awhile to catch us, but once they saw who we were, they stopped the chase." From that conversation I still have the entertaining vision of a marked Border Patrol unit, just a few days after the World Trade Center attack going at high speed across the desert. What mission are these guys on? Do they have Osama himself handcuffed in there or what? I have always just thought of that as an entertaining thought and wanted to share it. Have a great day, |
