1983 300SD. Found Oil Leak, hard time identifying part. (have pics)
This is my first post. First I would like to say thank you to everyone who contributes to this site, amazing community that you all have here.
Bought the car 3 months ago (first diesel). Huge oil leak on the passenger side going into the turbo from a metal pipe that comes from a driver side canister. The leak is a crack in the pipe and not from the "manifold" or connection to the turbo. I don't have the service manual just yet so I don't know the names of these parts. My questions are... 1) What is that tube/part named? 2) On the driver side where the tube connects to the canister I can't feel any bolts to disconnect the tube. Is that canister (cylinder) and the tube one piece? 3) I researched the best I could and I believe the chassis model is W126, is this correct? Thank you guys in advance. Once I fix this I will have some questions about the oil cleanup process. Had to put 3 gallons in it to get it back home. so that is all underneath the car. |

Turbo oil supply line. Three gallons
Firewall does not look like a 126SD. Are you sure it's not just a 300d?

Reply to Kerry
If you click on the small bottom picture it will go to my photobucket. I put a bunch of pictures up of the car. I can take more to help identify it.
Thank you |

On the back of the car it says 300D on driver side, then Turbo Diesel on the passenger side.

You are missing the control arm that connects the cruise control to the throttle mechanism. A bit hard for the cruise control to work in that configuration.

Replace that ASAP. Thats the high pressure turbo-bearing oil feed line. Just from your couple of pictures I spotted around half a dozen things needing urgent replacement/repair!

Yeah, like you need an air cleaner assembly.
And a battery.

Anyone know where I can find one? Part # maybe? Or else I'm off to the boneyards.
Tyl604. Where exactly is this control arm supposed to go into the throttle mechanism? Is it the open port were all those other hoses are are going into. There is one that is just open. PawoSD. I'd be happy to hear what other things I need to replace/repair. I got my hands on some W123 manuals. Chassis, engine (617), climate, maintenance. I will start reading them now. Thank you guys. |

Take a look at the red arrow. It points to the arm which is missing. The arm connects your cruise control to the throttle linkage.

I am just about the farthest you could be from a tree hugger type. But 3 GALLONS!?!?! Ever heard of a tow truck? I know it can be a big expense but NO, that 3 gallons isn't under the car, it is in your @#$%^&* water!

Ahhh, good eye TYL604. I will tackle that next. Maybe the previous owner disconnected it for a reason. Maybe it was sleep walking at night...

It's not the volume of oil that is the issue in my mind. It's the fact that there's a good chance the turbo was starved for oil while it was driven with a leak in that line.

Reply to all.
I do feel horrible about dropping that oil on the road. I had no choice though guys, I was 300+ miles away from home and had no money to tow or take it to a repair shop.
If it makes you feel any better it actually ends up biting me in the ass because I'm in the ocean frequently and all drains lead to the ocean. I took the tube out and found a hairline fracture on the tube itself at the bend coming off the turbo, I threw some JB weld on it and let it harden under a heat lamp over night. The oil still pushed through though after that. How much pressure is going though that line? Kerry, the turbo is still alive. I had to get home but I made sure not to rev it too high. |
