603.961 Faqs?

Love this site, been lurking for a long time.

I'm looking at 97 300 SDL. I'm sure that I remember seeing a FAQ or thread of things to look for (besides Al head probs) on these cars.

Can somebody inform / direct me?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.
I assume you mean an '87 300SDL?
First thing would be to use the Search Feature (type in "300SDL") to view discussion topics on these models.
Apart from the Head issues that you are already aware of, the next most common maintenance item is the A/C system and Climate Control unit. Failures or intermittant use are common and repairs often expensive, so be forewarned.
The Radiators had a weak area around the Plastic 'stub' that connects with the Top Rad Hose. Look for seepage or temporary repairs in this area.
Check the Belt Tensioner system - again a common weakness but not too expensive to repair.
Look at the Vacuum Pump (front of engine below Power Steering Pump) to see if it has a smooth front cover or has four screw heads exposed. The Smooth covers indicate an early or original Vac Pump that if it fails can release its bearings into the engine with potentially catastophic results. Later pumps (with the 4 Screws) had encapsulated bearings to avoid this. If the car has an early Pump it may be fine for years to come, but most people replace them as preventative maintenance.

Maintenance records are essential to see if the car has been well maintained. Properly serviced these cars will give many hundreds of thousands of miles service, but neglected they can fast become a money-pit. If you are serious about the car spend $100-$150 and have the car checked out by a M-B Specialist. Its worth the money.
Good Luck.

Oops, yes '87, a mistake in my first post, what a noob.

I hadn't tried putting the "300" and "SDL" together, that works much better.

Thanks.
