broke off key in ignition
 

Does anyone know how to remove it? This happened to my wife. She has a BMW 325ci. Any help is greatly appreciated. All but a 1/4 of an inch is in the ignition. I'm afraid that I may have to buy a new ignition switch. Ouch. Thanks for any help. I know that this is a BMW but, this board is the best.

I've never tried this but maybe you could put a tiny dab of super glue on what you have left of the key, insert it into the ignition and maybe it will stick to that tiny piece in there. Of course if any super glue gets into the ignition that could be a real mess. You could always use dynomite. :rifle:

Can tease it out with couple of picks. This happened to my jeep, Fortunately it broke in such a way that the tumbler still worked, so I was able to drive over to the locksmiths place, he only charged me $15.00 for the service + two keys. It only took him 30 seconds to remove it.

A week later the key broke off again, and its still like that today 5 years later.

so you really dont need a key to start your wifes car???

I'd call a locksmith, and see what they can do for you

what if you got one of those neomideum (sp) magnets and put it by the key opening maybe the strength of the magent could get it out

I thought about a magnet, but I think the key is brass.:(

Puchace a rearview mirror adhesive kit ($1.99) rub the stub end of key with activator insert into key way to get activator on broken piece, wait 1 minute and place a very very thin line of adhesive to the key end - no excess glue! Place key into ignition and secure in place around steering column with rubber bands. Wait 1 hour and pull key straight out. This adhesive is not like conventional adhesive - but care does need to be taken -no excess glue

Take steering column apart and push out from rear access hole with paperclip.

Call a locksmith

PLEASE DON'T USE GLUE!!!!!!!!
as a locksmith i've seen too many broken keys that have been superglued into the lock with no hope of removal.
if you take it to a locksmith the service will probably be < $20.00 but after its been glued into the lock, its a matter of getting a new ignition switch, rekeying to be the same as the rest of the locks, then (on some cars) dissassembling the dash, removing the old one, which could be glued into the housing (dependant on ho much glue you used) in that case there will be a lot more trouble involving getting the old one out before the new cyl. can be installed! my advice is:
go to a Locksmith in your area
