need help adjusted rack damper wrong
I have a 80300sd and adjusted the rack damper pin wrong....I went too far in with it and it caused the injection pump to stay there. I can't get it to adjust back. The engine now stalls and increases idle speed on it's own. I think I really blew it. Does anyone know if there is a way to get it back to run correctly. Did I ruin the inj. pump? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
When you say "I can't get it to adjust back", can you please elaborate? Normally, the locknut is loosened and the screw is simply backed out a touch. |

rack damper pin
well I read that the new style rack damper is suppose to be a little longer so I got this crazy idea to grind down the lock nut a little (about 1/16 inch) so the pin could go in a little further to help the motor to not idle so hard. Well I tightened down the pin bolt and I guess it pushed up against something in there and caused it to stay that way, because when I back the pin bolt out it doesn't make any difference.

What happens if you start over.
Remove the bolt completely. What does the engine do at idle? |

I backed the pin almost completely out and it still does the same. I think I caused something to get jammed in the i.p.

With the engine shut off, open and close the rack a few times (with your right foot on the pedal).
See if this will reposition the rack. I don't think you caused any permanent problem. |

I'm sorry I don't understand this procedure. Could you explain how to do that. I don't really understand what the rack is. Is it the throttle linkage to the i.p.?

I'm sorry you're having problems. I turned mine in about 1/2 a turn the other day and it runs even better than ever. The idle wasn't bad before but its even better now. I think it might need to go in a little more but to do that I think I'm going to need to get the new bolt. Hope you can fix it and best of luck.

that didn't seem to work. It has no power idles like it's not hitting on one or even two. When I put it in gear it just stalls out on me. Before I did this today it had a lot of power... even could scratch in second gear. The idle just seemed too harsh so I tried this thing with the rack damper pin. I appreciate your help in this.

I'm a bit perplexed on what that screw could have damaged inside the IP. AFAIK, it only applies some spring tension to the rack.
Let's see tomorrow if some other members have some input. |

I think when I screwed it down it went past the spring tension and was going against the solid part of the bolt. I'm going to ask around today in Houston at a couple of shops. I don't know what the rack is, but I'm learning a hard lesson here. thank you for your input on this.

There is a sort of bellcrank assy that the rack damper contacts...I don't have a photo but can see if the housing of the bolt contacted it the damage that can result...I have been inside the IP so the picture is sharp in my mind...
look at the red circle.......look to the 10 oclock position from that...the verticle arm is what this contacts...and where damage if any has happened.

I wonder if the bellcrank got bent slightly. And if it did, if the back cover of the IP could be removed and the bellcrank straightened. But, that's one thing I haven't had apart - YET!
