Having MBZ keys cut
I got a pair of new uncut MBZ keys from the 70's and 80's from an ebay sale and need to have them cut for my 79 300SD. I only have one key...
Anyone know where to take them? What does the locksmith need to do it? I was told the dealer would not do it... Thanks for the help! |

Any key cutter at a locksmith or hardware store that can handle dual sided keys can do it...Mercedes is not the only manufacturer that used double sided keys.

are the key steel or brass? be careful of the brass ones, they can damage the lock over time, do a search for brass key and see if you can see some previous discussion of their use,

i only had one key for my 300D and bought the keys on ebay too. i then went to lowes and had them cut them for me. i made a deal with them where they only charged me $1 per key to cut. they worked great.

The brass ones leave behind shavings that eventually destroy the tumbler.

cutting mb keys
I recently had some spares made up of key blanks. Rather than going to a hardware store I went to a professional locksmith. In my opinion, leaving any sharp edges on the newly cut key blanks is bad news (in general) for the ignition, door locks, etc. The new keys work superbly, no sign of having to "wear in" to an old lock. If you're so inclined, and I don't discount those forum members who say just go to a hardware store or other non-specialty locksmithing store, just look in the yellow pages for a locksmith.

I couldn't get ANYBODY but the dealer to make a key for my 92 190E 2.3. Nobody. They got the serial number, and a few days later, I had the incorrect key. The third try was the charm...
Something about lazer cut or whatever. Also like 30 bucks.
