Display - 1999 E300
I was out of the office for a while to come back to an email from my wife that read:
"The car beeped at me and when I looked at the dash it said 'Display Defective" All of my lights were on (i.e. brake, oil, etc.)." Any ideas? Thanks |
Let me guess, all was fine after restarting the car. This is one of the messages I occasionally get too and it's totally random. Welcome to the W210 world of false warnings.:o I'd just press the R button and keep on driving unless the message is persistent.

Defective display
My defective display was intermittant for a while (2-3 months)
Now it's on all the time - I push the Reset 2x after every start. This is getting old and I might send it to FL for a reprogram Stealer gets like $1400 for a new display  or you can live with it. No other CEL at the moment, I just replaced the AMM (code P0100) and ordered my first laptop OBD II reader/ programmer. PMU |

1. I've heard the $1400 is just for the new display. 2. Do a search here (i'm short on time) or Google. I believe there is a company in FL that will reprogram or rebuild these displays for $400 (hopefully) 3. Codes CEL = check engine light AMM = air mass meter MAF = mass air flow sensor I think AMM and MAF are one and the same. anyway, $181 and a new sensor later my CEL went away. PMU |
"Display Defective" usually means one of the control units connected to the cluster via CAN is not transmitting correctly. This could be IFI diesel ecu, ESP, Trans, SRS, ect...The Cluster itself could have gremlins, but it is usually another control unit rocking the boat.

What is CAN? Will this show up on a OBD? |
Contoller Area Network. It is a high speed data buss between all the involved control units. I don't think a universal OBD scanner can diagnose CAN unless it is CAN-enhanced. Codes for CAN faults will be stored, but they may not
have descriptions on a non OEM scan tool. My Snap-on Scanner will not show me 10% of the codes that the factory MB scanner will. Dr.D |
