Engine doesn't shut off after replacing fuel return hose

Never had shut off problems since buying my 240D eight months ago...
It always shut off promptly upon turning the key.

Two days ago I replaced the fuel return hose segments, which had been
leaking for some time. Right after doing that, the engine just doesn't shut
off any longer after removing the key, it just keep running indefinitely.
Even pushing down the shut off lever inside the engine compartment just
slows down the engine idle, but it doesn't shut it off.
To shut it off I've resorted to putting it in first gear, pushing on the brake
pedal and slowly lifting the clutch pedal until eventually the engine dies off.

What is going on?

Most likely you nocked a vacuum line loose. Pop the hood and look around.

Ten to one odds that you knocked loose a vacuum connection under the hood. If this is the only vacuum accessory that isn't working, follow the line from the shutoff solenoid on the back of the pump to the firewall, I bet it's freshly cracked or unplugged somewhere.

Improper adjustment in the linkage? I assume its an unrelated issue however.

9 out of 10 times the linkage is misadjusted causing the STOP lever not to depress fully at the IP. It's a different problem then the vac shutoff not working.

manual shutoff

When my vacuum pump failed last year due to a quarter-inch hole in the diaphragm, I used the manual shutoff for a while, and found it wouldn't quite shut off unless the manual idle adjustment knob on the dash was all the way down. If that doesn't solve the problem, I guess I would try adjusting the linkages involved.

Seems like there are two distinct problems and both seem easy to rememdy. I'd fix both.

SUCCESS!!! Upon careful inspection I found a tiny red/green plastic tube was disconnected from the vacuum line. Upon connecting it, the engine now shuts off promptly upon turning the key. What's funny is that this connection is far away from the area where I did my work and it's very unlikely that I might have knocked it off. My guess is that it had been disconnected for a long time... Yet, I hadn't experienced any problems with shutting down the engine until I replaced the fuel return line. Go figure...

Thank you all who have contributed! You have been very helpful and I am grateful (and much relieved!)

Rino
