Hang on, let me go out and see if the 240 will run on orange juice....makes as much sense, and likely won't blow out my windows.

you guys are missing the total success of the plan.

Phone call after whunter left-

"Hey boss, we were at lowes picking up the supplies you wanted, and the engine just blew on the old van! I have no idea what happened, but we can't make it out to the job.
.....uh huh
.....uh huh
.....ok, I guess jake and bill can handle it today, we'll wait here for the tow truck.
.....yup, ok.
Sorry boss, don't know how this happened, everything seemed fine and as soon as it started it seemed like it threw a rod.
.....yeah, its an old van, maybe it was time"
.....thanks, bye. "

after the hang up-

"tow truck wont be here for 2 hours, that bar is where?"

I am stunned by extreme dangerous - stupid behavior...

Just back from LOWES.

**************

I watched a (house painter) GMC diesel Van owner detonate - Blast - explode his engine.

He bought many gallons of acetone and a one gallon bug sprayer.

Got what I needed, returned to my 240D to return urgent calls - make notes.

I watched him pour gallons of acetone in the fuel tank, his buddy long cranked the engine several times, but it would not start ???

Then he filled the bug sprayer with acetone, sprayed lots of acetone into the intake, and continued spraying while his buddy cranked.

My 240D was starting to move 100 feet away, when the overpressure - flash

KABOOM:
The front tires came off the ground, as bits of engine - Flame blasted out from under the van.
The spray person was thrown at least ten feet.
The van windshield popped out...

Both failed to win a Darwin award , as they where stumbling around when I exited the parking lot.

That has to be one heck of a memorable experience. Please, next time you see something this comedic, take a video.

Glow plugs are the best way to start a MB Diesel but when they completely fail me, I disconnect the GP system and use sparing amounts of starting fluid. Having a few working GPs and spraying half a can of starting fluid into the intake is not the proper way to start a Diesel with starting fluid.

They survived?
One or both will likely have children, if not already.
Be prepared for the sequel.

FWIW, both are likely temporarily deaf and may have permanent ringing reminders.

you've got to wonder... since they poured so much in the tank, and were prepared with a garden sprayer... how many times have they done this? and where did they get the idea to try it?
I'd have wanted to interview them for reasons and answers...
and I'd have surely wanted to videotape the carnage...

The 240D was in motion; Because I have been near enough Explosions for total assurance that this will end BADLY...

The least I expected was similar to this
Diesel Engine Explodes at Tractor Pull Video | Break.com
Tractor Pull Engine Explosion - YouTube

All I could think of while (clock ticking) trying to make the 240D Move Fast:
#1. Acetone, poured in tank.
#2. Acetone, spilled on the ground.
#3. At least four open empty Acetone cans laying on the ground.
#4. The fuel tank cap is on the ground.
#5. Every time the starter cranks = the brushes are sparking...
#6. Every time they try to start the glow plug circuit activates..
#7. He is actually spraying Acetone into the intake manifold!!!
Repeat after me: Fuel Air Explosion.

The only place I wanted to be is many miles away.

I went to look at a Rabbit diesel pickup once, and the "mechanic" that was selling it (he liened it) gave it several shots of ether...it rattled to life, but I walked away.
