I bought a '77 300D, did I pay too much?

This is my first MB. I bought it from a certified Mercedes mechanic who said it had one owner and he did all the work on it. It has a newer engine with 90,000 miles. It is in great shape, everything works but the cruise. It has 400,000 miles. I payed $2500. No rust.

I'd say you got a reasonable deal.

Sounds about right based on the newer engine. The value of these has more to do with condition than mileage once they reach a certain point (i.e., a 300K car isn't worth much more than a 400K car, if they are in similar condition). It's probably had a lot of the major work done already if it was properly maintained. It sounds like yours was well taken care of, so have fun.

There is an old expression in the back of my mind as my frontal lobes have packed it in years ago. Basically it goes. If the car makes you happy and has a far less than average amount of problems over your ownership period you wil think you got a really good deal. In fact you may even conclude he did not charge you enough. Just human nature I guess. On the other hand perhaps we will not go there. Oh yes I have a pretty good 77 300d as well but could not put a fair value on it if I tried. Would not think 2500 an unreasonable price for someone if I decided to sell it. Just drives so nice and is very clean. Sure mine has low indicated total milage but even though the service booklet in dash indicates it is so I kind of think otherwise. I would tell any prospective purchaser that I suspect it has about three times the indicated milage in my opinion but cannot define why I feel that way about it. Just a suspicion.

Just think, while you were buying your '77, someone else was just paying ten times that for a brand new bare-bones compact sedan that will get them place to place with no sense of satisfaction or class whatsoever. Poor sap. You've got a nice, distinctive car that will serve you well for a long time, requesting just some routine maintainence (that won't be too hard to do), and a little love. Who got the good deal here?

its all a personal issue with "is it too much"

for me yes....but I have my own reasons....for others with a fresh engine and no rust they might say no....

Important thing is are you happy with it.
