8F 300d won't start

Well this morning I went out and tried to start the 300d to no avail. I'm gonna plug in the block heater when I get home and see how she reacts after a couple of hours.

It looks like the "Ack, she won't start!!!" season has started again. Don't mind me though, I had my own trouble starting this morning (not relating to the cold, but the crap rebuilt starter I busted my nuts installing ).

Plug in the block heater, and check the usual suspects.

* Make sure your glow plugs are working, test the resistance of each one, and make sure it is below 1.0 ohms. If you need more details on how to do that, do a search, its not hard.

* Make sure your battery is good. And not just good, but really in great shape. Take it to an auto parts store and have it checked under load. Replace if necessary.

* Change to a synthetic oil. It can make cold starts easier, and its better for the engine while cold.

* Make sure your starter is good. If you've got a fresh battery and your cranking speed is still a little low, you might be in line for a fresh starter. They are a pain in the butt to replace on the turbos.

* Get a valve adjustment. If you haven't had one in the last 15,000 miles, you may be in line for one. Properly adjusted valves help cold starting.

* Get a compression test. There isn't much you can do about low or marginal compression, but if the test shows good compression, then at least you can rule it out and start looking at the other things more closely.

If you need to get it started quick, try this. Plug in the block heater to get things started. Boil up a few gallons of water on the stove. Take it out to the car (CAREFULLY), and slowly pour it over the head. Try to avoid the electrical stuff, just pour over the bottom part of the valve cover by the head, and around the injectors (to heat the prechambers). As you are running out of water, have a helper turn on the glow plugs, let them glow for 15 seconds or so, and give it a solid crank. If that doesn't do it, then you may be out of luck until you can get it warmer again.

peace,
sam
