Does a vacuum pump need to be timed?

I thought for sure I could find this in a search but no luck yet. I'm going to replace my vacuum pump, do I just pull it out and put the new one in or does it need to be timed to the engine somehow? This is on a 603, currently has the original pump.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Murphy's law gets me again. Two seconds after I post I find exactly what I'm looking for. If anyone else is replacing the vac pump on a 603, check out Hatterasguy's instructions...

How to replace a 603 vacuum pump.
